Program Kodi mulai dibuat pada tahun 2003 oleh sekelompok programmer. Tim Kodi adalah sekelompok sukarelawan dari seluruh dunia, lebih dari 450 pengembang perangkat lunak sampai saat ini telah berkontribusi terhadap Kodi, termasuk lebir dari 100 penerjemah telah bekerja untuk memperluas jangkauan kodi, sehingga membuatnya tersedia di lebih dari 65 bahasa.

Kodi adalah aplikasi media player gratis dan open source yang dikembangkan oleh Yayasan XBMC, yaitu sebuah konsorsium teknologi non-profit.
